"A Toast To The Stars: The Palm Springs Variety Show"

Walk on the wild side, like the movie stars who held court with the mob, right here in Palm Springs. Curb appeal, no way, but go around back to the RED DOOR and see what awaits you inside.…


Be transported back to the Hollywood and Palm Springs Golden Era with your favorite music, good wine, great food and guest stars who were there! Come join us for the third annual "A Toast to the Stars: The Palm Springs Variety Show."


Every Wednesday, February 14 through April 25, from 6:15 - 8:30 p.m., the popular event will be hosted at the ever hep, ever cool, The Hideaway Lounge.


Patterned after the quintessential Rat Pack party on stage, enjoy a non-stop, energetic evening of live music mixed with Palm Springs and Hollywood history, trivia and dish. Included is a dazzling three course, gourmet, sit down dinner. 


Each week a guest star will share their insider stories and/or perform. Guest stars Include: Gavin MacLeod, Peggy Gohl, Bill Marx, Andrew Belling, Trini Lopez, Joyce Bulifant, Alison Arngrim, and Gregg Oppenheimer.  Dates and biographies are listed below, after the event description.


"A Toast to the Stars: The Palm Springs Variety Show" is presented by Five Stars Adventures Tours and Events (FSA.) In Palm Springs for over 20 years, FSA is known for their personal tours and upbeat events, all of which are dedicated to rejuvenating the spirit of Hollywood’s Golden Era in old Palm Springs.


Dinner

The dinner will be catered by popular local food purveyor PS Underground, who will provide a scrumptious three course meal. Included in the purchase price, will be an additional, complimentary wine reception and warm welcome.


The Show/Performers

The show is filled with many of the Golden Era and Rat Pack’s  favorite hits, as well as music from composers, singers, TV and movie stars who have had homes in the Coachella Valley.  Guests are welcomed to sing along as we raise our glasses, literally toasting our favorite stars. The dynamic trio,The Golden Era Singers, features Francesca Amari, an award-winning actress and cabaret vocalist who has appeared on the top cabaret stages from New York to Hollywood. Her perfect counterpoint is crooner Gilmore Rizzo, who tours nationally with his own show, “That’s Amore,” and appeared for 8 years on the Emmy-winning TV series, “Murphy Brown.”  As piano accompanist and elegant third voice, Wayne Abravanel impresses with his penning of the original, signature song for the event, “A Toast To Palm Springs.”


Legends and Icons Tour Option
For an additional $60 per person, add the famous Legends and Icons Tour just before you go to "A Toast to the Stars: The Palm Springs Variety Show." Hosted in Mercedes Benz vans, see more than 50 houses of the celebrities who had their getaway homes in Palm Springs. Enjoy a deep discount for this same day tour which ordinarily sells for $99 per person.


The Setting, Parking

There is FREE PARKING at The Hideaway Lounge, located at: 

665 South Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs. 

Look for the RED DOOR in the back! Continue the party at this hep lounge, a favorite for locals, where the old school cool never gets old.


Times

4:30 p.m. - Combination Event/Legends and Icons Tour picks up at 

The Hideaway Lounge

6:15 p.m. - Enjoy a complimentary wine while, using your cell camera, we take your picture on the red carpet in front of a Hollywood style backdrop, for your personal souvenir.

6:30 p.m. - The RED DOORS open and the event begins

8:30 to 8:45 p.m. - Show ends

Guest Stars Appearance Dates and Biographies

February 14 - Gavin MacLeod

Actor, ship’s ambassador, Christian activist, author Gavin MacLeod’s six decades career has given the watching public many lovable characters. He is best known for his starring role on “The Love Boat” as Captain Merrill Stubing, earning him three Golden Globe nominations during his 9 seasons. It was as Murray Slaughter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show that he became a household name, and where he earned two Golden Globe nominations. MacLeod, a resident of Palm Springs, was honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in downtown Palm Springs, California.

 

February 21 - Peggy Gohl

Singer, dancer Peggy Gohl is best known as one of the famous Dean Martin “Golddiggers.This ensemble, renowned for their talent and glamour, were featured onThe Dean Martin Show as well is on the Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin Tour, both on the road and in Las Vegas. Gohl dazzles audiences with her quick wit, gleaming smile, velvet tone voice and vivacious personality. Gohl has the stories and she loves to tell them. An evening with the irrepressible Peggy Gohl is one full of great, authentic, old school entertainment.

 

February 28 - Bill Marx 

March 7 - Bill Marx 

Bill Marx, son of the silent and zany Harpo Marx, is a Julliard trained composer, arranger and performer on the piano. His beautiful and expressive playing transports the listener to time past. Bill Marx collaborated with his father on albums until Harpo’s death in 1964. He was 17 at the time he made his arrangement for harp for "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" for Harpo’s famous appearance on I Love Lucy.  Bill Marx authored Son of Harpo Speaks! (Bearmanor Media). This  insider’s story about Hollywood’s comedic royalty shares intimate memories of his relationship with his famous father.

 

Andrew Belling - March 14

As the musical director for the Dinah Shore Show, and having received a scholarship from and having worked with Frank Sinatra, Belling is well equipped to regale with stories of these luminaries as well as the myriad of music and acting A list friends with whom he has worked over the years. Belling began as a successful studio musician who played with The Kingston Trio, Linda Ronstadt, and Rick Nelson. He created special material for Donna Summer, Ginger Rogers, Susan Anton, Ann-Margret, The Osmonds, Dionne Warwick, Lucie Arnaz, Gloria Gaynor, Rita Coolidge, Fernando Lamas, George Segal, Natalie Wood, Richard Benjamin, Valerie Harper, and many others.

Trini Lopez - March 28

American singer and actor Trini Lopez was discovered by Frank Sinatra, who signed Lopez to his label, Reprise Records. Lopez had 16 Top 40 songs on the charts from 1963 through 1968, including the hit song "If I Had a Hammer", which earned him a Golden Disc. Other beloved hits include "Lemon Tree", "I'm Comin' Home, Cindy" and "Sally Was a Good Old Girl.” As an actor, Lopez played one of The Dirty Dozen (1967) with Frank Sinatra. In 1973 Lopez stared as Antonio Contreras in “Antonio.”

 

April 4 - Joyce Bulifant

Joyce Bulifant will perform songs and tell her treasure trove of “backstage stories” from her years of working in Hollywood. As a singer, television and film actress, and author, Bulifant is known for her sweet, child-like Southern-accented voice. The role that made her famous was that of Marie Slaughter on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” playing Gavin MacLeod’s wife. Bulifant recently published her memoir, entitled “My Four Hollywood Husbands.” Bulifant has the stories and is not afraid to tell them.

 

April 18 - Alison Arngrim

Alison Arngrim was a child star known by everyone who watched television in the seventies. Her role on Little House on the Prairie as Nellie Oleson garnered her the Young Artist Award: Former Child Star Lifetime Achievement Award, and the TV Land Award: for “Character Most Desperately in Need of a Timeout.”  Arngrim grew up in Hollywood, and with her signature humor, she shares stories from living at the Chateau Marmont during the swinging sixties. No stranger to Hollywood’s celebrity haunts, Angrim provides the most “dishy and personal” insights into celebs of yesterday and today.

April 25 - Gregg Oppenheimer

 

We all love Lucy and we have since Gregg Oppenheimer’s father, Jess, created the iconic series in 1951. After his father’s death in 1988, his son, Gregg Oppenheimer became one of the world’s foremost experts on I Love Lucy.  Gregg worked with the CBS and Paramount Home Entertainment as producer of the I Love Lucy DVDs and was the recipient of two TV DVD awards for producing in the “Best 1950’s Series” category. He went on to executive produce the comprehensive I Love Lucy DVD set following the Ricardos and the Mertzes from the long-lost Pilot to the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hours.
