Mark served as a 81mm Motorman with 3rd BN 1st MAR from April 1997- March 2001. After he got out of the Marine Corps, he joined the Chicago Police Department.

Police Officer Mark Pickert #9832, was shot in the left hand while on duty February 19, 2012 after responding to a “person with a gun” call resulting in saving his partners life. While Mark was trying to apprehend the offender he noticed that the subject had a loaded 45-caliber handgun in the sleeve of his sweater pointed to the back of his partners head. Mark immediately pushed his partner out of the way. He then grabbed the slide of the gun and pushed it back to prevent the offender from firing the weapon. It was to late! Mark was shot in his left hand didn’t realize it and continued to try and apprehend the offender. Mark now suffers from severe nerve damage in his left hand. Mark has gone through several extensive treatments and therapies to regain sensation and full use of his hand without any success. The hand specialist said it could take up to 3 years to regain sensation. As a result from the gunshot wound to his hand, Mark is unable to go back to the job he has loved the past 9 1/2 years. Mark has been put on a “NO PAY” status pending the Chicago Police Department Pension board hearing on whether or not he’ll qualify to receive disability benefits. Mark is left paying for his own health care benefits along with his everyday financial responsibilities. A benefit will be held in his honor September 19, 2013 at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7. located at 1412 W. Washington Blvd, Chicago, IL 60607 from 6PM to 11PM.
