ICE BEARS AND ISLANDS

A World First Adventure Around Svalbard Norway

TORONTO 24th FEB

“This adventure was simply about a dream, it didn’t matter how we did it, sea kayaks where just a mode of transport, this was about pushing what we knew was possible and achieving a world first was just a bonus” ~Jaime Sharp

Svalbard, a remote and desolate Island group located closer to the North Pole than the top of Mainland North America, remained a dangerous goal for kayakers until 2015. This Story is about more than sea kayaking, this is an adventure in the high arctic, a world first journey in a place that doesn’t want man to be there.... well maybe in order to eat them. In June 27th 2015 3 people set off to journey around the 4 main islands of Svalbard in Norway, islands almost always locked in sea ice, lands occupied by 3000 or more polar bears. This ended up being and adventure of 2200km’s with a stretch of coastline that was made entirely of 100 foot glacial cliffs unbroken for 160km, there had been past attempts, they had all failed, in fact most had almost died trying.

Come along to the Toronto YWCA Nancy Auditorium on the 24th Feb at 6.30 pm to hear the stories, see the images and be blown away by the video of the World First Sea Kayak Circumnavigation of Svalbard.

“We thought we were done with polar bears, when suddenly PG yells “POLAR BEAR!” I turned to see a polar bear swimming after us, and faster than we could Kayak!” ~ Jaime Sharp
